Halloween Math & Reading — Answer Key
Part A: Fix the Sentence
Each sentence has an error. Rewrite it correctly on the line.
1. Fix the sentence:
The witches broom flew threw the midnight sky scattering sparks behind it.
Corrected: The witch's broom flew through the midnight sky, scattering sparks behind it.
The corrected sentence is: "The witch's broom flew through the midnight sky, scattering sparks behind it." The error was possessive apostrophe missing, homophones threw/through, and missing comma: the original sentence "The witches broom flew threw the midnight sky scattering sparks behind it." needed to be fixed.
2. Fix the sentence:
Neither the skeleton nor the mummy were invited to the monster's ball.
Corrected: Neither the skeleton nor the mummy was invited to the monster's ball.
The corrected sentence is: "Neither the skeleton nor the mummy was invited to the monster's ball." The error was subject-verb agreement — 'neither...nor' with singular subjects takes singular verb: the original sentence "Neither the skeleton nor the mummy were invited to the monster's ball." needed to be fixed.
3. Fix the sentence:
The children collected they're candy in orange buckets then sorted it by type.
Corrected: The children collected their candy in orange buckets, then sorted it by type.
The corrected sentence is: "The children collected their candy in orange buckets, then sorted it by type." The error was homophones they're/their and missing comma before 'then': the original sentence "The children collected they're candy in orange buckets then sorted it by type." needed to be fixed.
Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. A fraction where the numerator is larger than the denominator, like 74, is called an improper fraction.
An improper fraction has a numerator bigger than its denominator, meaning it is greater than one whole. For example, 74 equals 134.
2. The result of multiplying two numbers together is called the product.
The product is the answer you get when you multiply. For example, in 6 x 7 = 42, the product is 42.
3. In the number 5.038, the digit 3 is in the hundredths place.
In 5.038, the places after the decimal are tenths (0), hundredths (3), and thousandths (8), so the digit 3 is in the hundredths place.
4. To simplify a fraction, divide the numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor.
The greatest common factor (GCF) is the largest number that divides evenly into both the numerator and denominator. For example, in 68 the GCF is 2, giving 34.
Part C: Short Answer
Answer each question in one or two complete sentences.
1. A skeleton needs 38 of a yard of fabric for each bone cover. If it has 16 bones to cover, how many yards of fabric are needed?
Sample answer: Multiply 16 × 38 = 488 = 6. The skeleton needs 6 yards of fabric.
A good answer includes: Multiply 16 × 38 = 488 = 6. The skeleton needs 6 yards of fabric.
2. A cauldron holds 5.5 liters. A witch fills it with 3 batches of 1.75 liters each. Is the cauldron full? Explain.
Sample answer: Multiply 3 × 1.75 = 5.25 liters. Since 5.25 is less than 5.5, the cauldron is not full. It still has 0.25 liters of space.
A good answer includes: Multiply 3 × 1.75 = 5.25 liters. Since 5.25 is less than 5.5, the cauldron is not full. It still has 0.25 liters of space.
