Spring Math & Reading — Answer Key
Part A: Fix the Sentence
Each sentence has an error. Rewrite it correctly on the line.
1. Fix the sentence:
Plants make food using carbon dioxide and water through a process called respiration.
Corrected: Plants make food using carbon dioxide and water through a process called photosynthesis.
The corrected sentence is: "Plants make food using carbon dioxide and water through a process called photosynthesis.". The original sentence "Plants make food using carbon dioxide and water through a process called respiration." contained an error that needed to be fixed.
2. Fix the sentence:
During spring, the days get shorter which causes plants to begin growing again.
Corrected: During spring, the days get longer, which causes plants to begin growing again.
The corrected sentence is: "During spring, the days get longer, which causes plants to begin growing again.". The original sentence "During spring, the days get shorter which causes plants to begin growing again." contained an error that needed to be fixed.
3. Fix the sentence:
Pollen is carried only by bees from one flower to another during pollination.
Corrected: Pollen is carried by bees, butterflies, wind, and other agents from one flower to another during pollination.
The corrected sentence is: "Pollen is carried by bees, butterflies, wind, and other agents from one flower to another during pollination.". The original sentence "Pollen is carried only by bees from one flower to another during pollination." contained an error that needed to be fixed.
Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. The green pigment in leaves that captures sunlight for photosynthesis is called chlorophyll.
Chlorophyll is the pigment in plant cells that absorbs sunlight energy for photosynthesis.
2. During photosynthesis, plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen into the air.
Photosynthesis: CO₂ + H₂O + sunlight → glucose + O₂. Oxygen is the by-product.
3. The transfer of pollen from one flower to another is called pollination.
Pollination occurs when pollen is moved from a flower's stamen to another flower's pistil, enabling seed formation.
4. A tiny plant inside a seed begins to grow when conditions are right, a process called germination.
Germination is when a seed sprouts. It requires water, warmth, and oxygen.
Part C: Short Answer
Answer each question in one or two complete sentences.
1. Explain why spring is an ideal season for plant growth. Use at least two details about sunlight and temperature.
Sample answer: Spring is ideal for plant growth because the days get longer, giving plants more sunlight for photosynthesis. Also, temperatures rise above freezing, warming the soil so seeds can germinate and roots can absorb water.
More daylight = more photosynthesis. Warmer soil = faster seed germination and root development.
2. How are bees and flowers connected in a way that helps both survive? Describe the relationship.
Sample answer: Bees visit flowers to collect nectar for food. While gathering nectar, pollen sticks to their bodies and transfers to other flowers. This pollinates the flowers so they can produce seeds and fruit, helping both bees and plants survive.
This is a mutualistic relationship: both organisms benefit from the interaction.
