Fractions: Halves, Thirds & Quarters — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. 12 is greater than 14.
12 is greater than 14. When the whole is cut into fewer parts, each part is bigger.
2. 14 is less than 12.
14 is less than 12. Four equal parts are smaller than two equal parts of the same whole.
3. If you split a cookie into 2 equal parts, each part is 12.
Two equal parts means each part is one half (12).
4. The more equal parts a shape has, the smaller each part is.
More equal parts means each individual part is smaller. 14 < 13 < 12.
5. A shape with 2 equal parts has fewer pieces than one with 4 equal parts.
2 pieces is fewer than 4 pieces. But each piece in 2 parts is bigger than each piece in 4 parts.
6. 13 is greater than 14.
13 is greater than 14. Three equal parts are larger than four equal parts of the same whole.
7. The biggest unit fraction is 12.
Of 12, 13, and 14, the largest is 12 because halves are the biggest equal parts.
8. The smallest unit fraction of halves, thirds, and quarters is 14.
Of 12, 13, and 14, the smallest is 14 because quarters are the smallest equal parts.
9. Two halves make one whole.
Two halves (12 + 12) equal one whole. All the parts combined make the whole.
Part B: Matching
Draw a line to match each fraction word to its notation.
1. Draw a line from each fraction word on the left to its matching notation on the right.

→ 12
14
one third
→ 13
11
one quarter
→ 14
13
one whole
→ 11
12
one half→12, one third→13, one quarter→14, one whole→11.
