Fractions Intro — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. A circle split into 2 equal parts shows two halves.
Splitting a circle into 2 equal parts creates two halves. Each half is the same size as the other.
2. If you eat one half, you have one half left.
A whole has two halves. If you eat one half, only one half remains because 2 minus 1 equals 1.
3. A whole shape has no cuts in it.
A whole shape has not been divided at all. It is complete with nothing removed.
4. Equal means the same size.
Equal means the same size. When parts are equal, each one is just as big as the others.
5. Two halves put together make a whole.
Two halves fit together perfectly to make one whole because they are the two equal parts of the same thing.
6. When you cut a square in half, you get 2 equal parts.
Cutting a square in half divides it into 2 parts that are exactly the same size.
7. One half of the pie is shaded.
If one of two equal parts of the pie is colored in, that shaded part is one half of the pie.
8. To share means to give the same amount to each person.
To share means everyone gets a fair amount. When you share equally, each person receives the same size piece.
9. Each part must be the same size to be fair.
For sharing to be fair, every part must be the same size so nobody gets more or less than anyone else.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
half
→ 1 of 2 same pieces
1 of 2 same pieces
whole
→ not cut at all
not cut at all
equal parts
→ same size pieces
same size pieces
share
→ give some to others
give some to others
A half is 1 of 2 same pieces. A whole has not been cut at all. Equal parts means all pieces are the same size. To share means to give some to others.
