Subtraction Within 10 — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. 9 - 3 = 6
9 - 3 = 6. Count back three steps from 9 (8, 7, 6) or think 6 + 3 = 9 to check.
2. 7 - 5 = 2
7 - 5 = 2. If you have 7 grapes and eat 5, just 2 grapes are left.
3. 10 - 4 = 6
10 - 4 = 6. Since 6 + 4 makes a ten, 10 take away 4 leaves 6.
4. 8 - 6 = 2
8 - 6 = 2. Eight is just two more than six, so the difference is 2.
5. 6 - 1 = 5
6 - 1 = 5. Taking one away from any number gives the number right before it.
6. 5 - 3 = 2
5 - 3 = 2. Use your fingers: put up 5, fold down 3, and 2 are still showing.
7. 10 - 8 = 2
10 - 8 = 2. Ten and eight are close on the number line, so only 2 steps separate them.
8. 9 - 7 = 2
9 - 7 = 2. Since 7 + 2 = 9, we know 9 minus 7 must be 2.
9. 4 - 2 = 2
4 - 2 = 2. Four is a doubles number, so taking away half leaves the other half.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
8 - 1
→ 7
7
10 - 6
→ 4
4
7 - 2
→ 5
5
9 - 6
→ 3
3
Each match links a subtraction problem to its correct difference: 8 - 1 = 7 (one less than 8), 10 - 6 = 4 (6 + 4 = 10), 7 - 2 = 5 (count back 2 from 7), and 9 - 6 = 3 (6 + 3 = 9).
