Subtraction Within 10 — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. 10 - 3 = 7
10 - 3 = 7. Count back three from ten (9, 8, 7) to find the answer.
2. 6 - 5 = 1
6 - 5 = 1. Six is just one step past five, so only 1 is left after taking 5 away.
3. 8 - 2 = 6
8 - 2 = 6. Two less than eight is six, just like eight fingers minus two fingers shows six.
4. 7 - 6 = 1
7 - 6 = 1. Seven and six are next-door numbers, so only 1 step separates them.
5. 9 - 1 = 8
9 - 1 = 8. One less than nine is eight, the number right before 9.
6. 5 - 4 = 1
5 - 4 = 1. Five minus four equals one; you can check with the addition 4 + 1 = 5.
7. 10 - 9 = 1
10 - 9 = 1. When the two numbers are right next to each other, the difference is always 1.
8. 8 - 3 = 5
8 - 3 = 5. Count back 3 from 8: 7, 6, 5. You can also think 5 + 3 = 8.
9. 6 - 3 = 3
6 - 3 = 3. Six is a doubles number, so taking 3 away leaves the other 3.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
9 - 2
→ 7
7
10 - 5
→ 5
5
7 - 1
→ 6
6
8 - 4
→ 4
4
Each problem matches its difference: 9 - 2 = 7 (since 7 + 2 = 9), 10 - 5 = 5 (half of ten), 7 - 1 = 6 (one less than 7), and 8 - 4 = 4 (half of eight).
