Time (Hours & Half Hours) — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. At 2 o clock the hour hand points to 2.
Every "o'clock" time lines up the short hand with its matching hour number. At 2 o'clock, the hour hand sits directly on the 2.
2. The minute hand moves faster than the hour hand.
The minute hand zips all the way around the clock in just one hour, while the hour hand only moves from one number to the next in that same time. That makes the minute hand much faster.
3. Half past 4 means the time is 4:30.
Half of an hour is 30 minutes, because 60 minutes split in half is 30. So half past 4 is written as 4:30.
4. At 7 o clock the minute hand points to 12.
Any "o'clock" time means zero extra minutes have gone by, so the long hand rests at the top. The 12 is always that top-of-the-clock starting position.
5. When it is half past 9, the hour hand is between 9 and 10.
At half past, the hour hand has moved halfway to the next hour. Half past 9 means it sits between the 9 it just left and the 10 it is heading toward.
6. We eat lunch at about 12 o clock.
Lunch happens in the middle of the day, around noon, which is 12 o'clock. That is when the sun is highest in the sky.
7. At 5:30 the minute hand points to 6.
The ":30" part tells you the minute hand has traveled halfway around the clock. That halfway spot is always on the 6, straight down from the 12.
8. The short hand on a clock is the hour hand.
Clock makers give the hour pointer a shorter length so you can tell it apart from the minute pointer. The short one is the hour hand.
9. At 10 o clock the hour hand points to 10.
Whenever a time ends in "o'clock," the hour hand lands right on the matching number. So at 10 o'clock it points straight at the 10.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
8 o clock
→ 8:00
3:30
Half past 3
→ 3:30
8:00
6 o clock
→ 6:00
12:30
Half past 12
→ 12:30
6:00
The word "o'clock" means the minute part is :00, and "half past" means the minute part is :30. Using those rules, match each clock phrase to its digital time.
