Verbs — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. The frog can hop very high.
Hops describes how the girl is moving — little jumps on just one foot. Girl and foot are names; hops is the action.
2. I draw a picture with crayons.
Peeks means to sneak a quick look, and that is what he is doing behind the door. It is the only action word in the sentence.
3. We eat our food at the table.
The main job of every verb is to tell what is happening. That is why verbs show action — the work, movement, or doing.
4. He can lift the heavy box.
Hugs is the squeeze she gives her bear with her arms. Teddy bear is a thing; hugs is what she does with it.
5. She will kick the ball to me.
Blows is the pushing-air action the wind does. Wind and leaves name things, but blows tells what is really happening.
6. They run together at recess.
Sit is the action of resting on our bottoms. Rug names the place, but sit names what our bodies are doing.
7. The baby likes to clap.
Tosses is a gentle throw through the air. Ball is the thing being thrown, but tosses is the action he does.
8. I hug my mom goodbye.
Doing word is the easy name, and verb is the grammar name. Both mean the same thing — a word that shows action.
9. We smile when we are happy.
Hide is the action of going somewhere so nobody sees you. Tree is a thing, but hide names what they are doing.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
hop
→ jump on one foot
hold someone close
eat
→ chew and swallow
jump on one foot
kick
→ hit with your foot
chew and swallow
hug
→ hold someone close
hit with your foot
Pick the verb that makes the sentence make sense. Hungry babies cry, loud voices (yell) don't belong in a library, balls roll down hills, and broken toys need to be fixed.
