Time to the Minute — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. If it is 2:15 and 30 minutes pass, the new time is 2:45.
Adding 30 minutes to 2:15 means 15 + 30 = 45 minutes past 2, so the new time is 2:45. The hour stays the same because the minutes don't reach 60.
2. The clock shows the hour hand past 5 and the minute hand on 8. The time is 5:40.
Each clock number stands for 5 minutes, so the 8 means 8 × 5 = 40 minutes past the hour. With the hour hand past 5, the time reads 5:40.
3. From 9:00 to 9:45, 45 minutes have passed.
From 9:00 to 9:45, the minute hand has moved from the 12 to the 9, covering 45 minutes. Since both times share the same hour, you simply subtract: 45 - 0 = 45.
4. If recess starts at 10:20 and lasts 15 minutes, it ends at 10:35.
Recess at 10:20 plus 15 more minutes brings the clock to 10:35, because 20 + 15 = 35.
5. The minute hand on 3 and the hour hand between 7 and 8 shows the time 7:15.
The 3 on the clock equals 3 × 5 = 15 minutes past the hour. With the hour hand between 7 and 8, the hour is 7, so the time is 7:15.
6. From 1:30 to 2:00, 30 minutes have passed.
Going from 1:30 to 2:00 means counting up by 30 minutes: from 30 to 60 is exactly half an hour.
7. If school starts at 8:05 and the bell rings 10 minutes early, the bell rings at 7:55.
If the bell rings 10 minutes before 8:05, subtract 10 from 5 minutes past 8. Since 5 - 10 goes below zero, you borrow from the hour: 7:55 is 10 minutes before 8:05.
8. A clock with the minute hand on 11 shows 55 minutes past the hour.
Each number on the clock equals 5 minutes, so the 11 marks 11 × 5 = 55 minutes past the hour.
9. From 4:10 to 4:40, 30 minutes have passed.
From 4:10 to 4:40, the hour stays at 4 and the minutes grow from 10 to 40, so 40 - 10 = 30 minutes have passed.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
Minute hand on 6
→ 30 minutes
0 minutes
Minute hand on 9
→ 45 minutes
5 minutes
Minute hand on 1
→ 5 minutes
30 minutes
Minute hand on 12
→ 0 minutes
45 minutes
The minute hand on 6 marks 30 minutes (6 × 5), the 9 marks 45 minutes, the 1 marks 5 minutes, and the 12 marks 0 minutes. Multiplying each clock number by 5 gives the matching minute count.
