Conjunctions — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. I packed sandwiches, apples, and juice boxes for the field trip.
'And' joins the final item in a list, signaling that all items belong together as one group.
2. You may choose red, white, or blue paint for your project.
'Or' is used in a list when only one item from the group will be chosen, not all of them.
3. The shelter takes care of dogs, cats, rabbits, and turtles.
Commas separate each item in a list of three or more, including before the final 'and' in many style guides.
4. Apples and oranges are both healthy snacks for school.
When only two items are joined, 'and' connects them without any commas between them.
5. We can hike, swim, or ride bikes at the summer camp.
'Or' fits when the list shows options, allowing the reader to pick one of several activities.
6. The recipe calls for flour, sugar, eggs, and butter.
'And' before the final ingredient shows that every item is needed together to complete the recipe.
7. Our class read books by Roald Dahl, Beverly Cleary, and Kate DiCamillo this year.
'And' before the final author signals the end of the list and includes all authors named.
8. Would you like vanilla, chocolate, or strawberry ice cream?
'Or' fits when the listener will pick just one flavor out of the three options offered.
9. Bring a notebook, a pencil, a ruler, and a calculator to math class.
A comma before 'and' (the serial or Oxford comma) keeps each item in a long list clearly separated.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
Pizza, pasta, and salad

Lists use 'and' to include all items, 'or' to show a choice, commas to separate three or more items, and no commas when only two items are joined.
