Verb Tenses — Answer Key
Part A: Fix the Sentence
Each sentence has an error. Rewrite it correctly on the line.
1. Fix the sentence:
Last summer we go to the beach every weekend.
Corrected: Last summer we went to the beach every weekend.
The corrected sentence is: "Last summer we went to the beach every weekend.". The original sentence "Last summer we go to the beach every weekend." contained an error that needed to be fixed.
2. Fix the sentence:
She is eat her lunch in the cafeteria right now.
Corrected: She is eating her lunch in the cafeteria right now.
The corrected sentence is: "She is eating her lunch in the cafeteria right now.". The original sentence "She is eat her lunch in the cafeteria right now." contained an error that needed to be fixed.
3. Fix the sentence:
Next week the class will visited the science museum.
Corrected: Next week the class will visit the science museum.
The corrected sentence is: "Next week the class will visit the science museum.". The original sentence "Next week the class will visited the science museum." contained an error that needed to be fixed.
Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. Irregular verbs do not follow the usual rules when forming the past tense.
Irregular verbs change unpredictably in the past tense (go → went, eat → ate, swim → swam).
2. The verb "is running" is an example of the present progressive tense.
Present progressive tense (is + verb-ing) describes an action happening right now.
3. In the sentence "They will arrive tomorrow," the tense is future.
Will + base verb signals the future tense — they will arrive describes a future action.
4. The past tense of the irregular verb "swim" is swam.
Swim is irregular — its past tense is swam, not swimmed.
Part C: Short Answer
Answer each question in one or two complete sentences.
1. What is the difference between a regular and an irregular past tense verb? Give one example of each.
Sample answer: A regular verb adds -ed to form the past tense, like "walked." An irregular verb changes its form, like "go" becoming "went."
Regular verbs follow a predictable -ed pattern; irregular verbs must be memorized because they don't follow this rule.
2. Rewrite this sentence in the future tense: "The dog chases the ball."
Sample answer: The dog will chase the ball. You add "will" before the base form of the verb to show the future tense.
Future tense = will + base verb form (chase, not chases).
